Sara Bogard was out at the Point Arena Lighthouse bluffs when she noticed a juvenile Red-shouldered Hawk and something else. She wrote, "This American Kestrel was diving at this Red-shouldered Hawk. The Kestrel won and the Red-shouldered Hawk flew off, a dramatic moment."

Sara also recently photographed a Belted Kingfisher. Such a cute little gal!

This morning I  heard a Red-shouldered Hawk calling overhead. Their call is quite distinctive and you can hear it for yourself at this link at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology: https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Red-shouldered_Hawk/sounds

Thanks to Sara for allowing me to share her photos with  you here.

Lots of dark clouds in the sky today but no rain predicted. This morning several people sent me photos of a cloud that looked like a bird...or an angel. I'll share it here soon.

Any day you see dolphins feels like a gift, but Thanksgiving Day? Perfection. Sara Bogard spotted a small pod off of the Point Arena Lighthouse bluffs. And there was a calf in the pod!

If  you look closely at the smaller dolphin, you will see creases, lines on its body. These are fetal folds, showing this is a newborn, a neonate, Bottlenose Dolphin! How wonderful is that?

Sunny, warm, no wind - just about perfect if we weren't longing for rain!

NEWS FLASH! Scott and Tree Mercer saw the first, the vanguard, of the Gray Whale southward migration yesterday, Wednesday. Yes, it's begun and the show is appearing off a bluff near you!

Once again, life is good when you are a Harbor Seal. Just look at this stretch that Sara Bogard photographed recently out on the Point Arena Lighthouse bluffs.

This Harbor Seal looks to be leading a stress-free life!

Thanks to Sara for allowing me to share her photo with you here.

Foggy right on the coast but sunny just a little bit away, and very mild temps.

Sara Bogard is a big fan of Harbor Seals. She recently photographed one obviously enjoying life.

While Sara is out on the bluffs of the Point Arena Lighthouse Peninsula, she is treated to many nature sightings. Here two young Brown Pelicans and a Western Gull are preening.

Thanks to Sara for allowing me to share her photos with you here.

It's was foggy this morning but the sun has appeared this afternoon. There are LOTS of visitors here - Gualala was packed earlier today. I will be at the Four-eyed Frog Bookstore tomorrow, Sunday, September 5, from 2 pm to 4pm. Here's the Frog's post, though the formatting is a little haywire! Not sure how to fix that.

Jeanne Jackson Brings Sunny to the Frog

Author Jeanne Jackson will be at the Four-Eyed Frog Bookstore from 2 to 4 pm on Sunday, September 5th. Jeanne is the author of Mendonoma Sightings Throughout the Year, and two children’s books, Sunny Loves Spring on the California Coast and Sunny Loves Summer on the California Coast. She also writes the Mendonoma Sightings column in the Independent Coast Observer.

You are invited to come and meet Jeanne at the Frog on this Labor Day Sunday. She will be autographing books, and several golden retriever stuffed animals will be given away. If you have already purchased one of her books and you’d like it personalized, bring your book to the event. New residents of the Mendonoma Coast are encouraged to meet Jeanne in person, as this is the first author event she has done since the pandemic began. Masks will be required.

Jeanne will also give a sneak preview to the other two Sunny books to come, Sunny Loves Autumn on the California Coast and Sunny Loves Winter on the California Coast. She will be showing some of illustrator Genny Wilson’s paintings for those two books, which she hopes to have available for the holidays. Free coloring pages will also be given out.

Sincerely,

Joel Crockett

I think Gray Fox kits are some of the cutest youngsters on the Mendonoma Coast. Sara Bogard recently photographed these two kits piled on top of each other.

I love Gray Fox kits so much that I chose one for the cover of my book, Mendonoma Sightings Throughout the Year. It was taken by Craig Tooley, the excellent photographer who's work is featured in this book.

Thanks to Sara for allowing me to share her photo with you here.

Same forecast as yesterday, fog on the immediate coast, sunny a little ways away. Just lovely weather!
