Sunny with a haze over the ocean today. Temps hit 70 degrees. The haze has cleared off this afternoon and there's a possibility of a green flash at sunset. I'll be watching!
Several weeks ago, the weather was clear with just a few scattered clouds, giving photographer Rozanne Rapozo a perfect opportunity to photograph the full Moon setting over Galleons' Arch Rock off The Sea Ranch.
I love the stairway of light from the Moon. Some call this the stairway to heaven.

We had nearly three inches of rain from the last storm, and several more are moving in. I've had over 21 inches so far this season, a cause for celebration! More rain beginning around 8 pm tonight. Temps are in the low fifties.
Rozanne Rapozo wrote, "The full Moon passed in front of the reddish planet Mars on the night of December 7th just as the planet was at its nearest to Earth and brightest."
"This was a rare event (only happens about every 2 years), made all the more special because December 7 was the 50th anniversary of the launch of Apollo 17, the last time people landed on the Moon."

Cold morning, blue skies and a calm ocean - yes, it's a lovely day on the Mendonoma Coast!
Rozanne Rapozo caught this American Kestrel just as it landed. It's fun to see its wing feathers and tail feathers extended. Kestrels use their long tails for balance.
Craig Tooley found this Kestrel staring down a Northern Flicker.
Kestrels are North America's smallest falcon. They eat insects and other small prey. They have an unusual call, rather excited notes, and you can hear it here at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology: https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/American_Kestrel/sounds

It's been cold here, it was 37 degrees this morning. As we take a break from the rains, passing clouds bring beauty to sunrises and sunsets. There is little wind and the ocean is calm. In other words, an exquisite, lovely day here on the Mendonoma Coast.
Eric Zetterholm was the first to photograph this nearly-white Red-shouldered Hawk, seen on The Sea Ranch.
We weren't sure what kind of hawk this was, but hawk expert Larry Broderick ID'd it for us. Here's another photo of this unusual hawk, taken by Eric.
Rozanne Rapozo located the hawk a few days later and got these photos.
So, you can see this hawk is not an albino as he/she does have some color. But this bird is mostly white on the back!

We had a wild storm overnight - .55 inches in our gauge. There was lightning and thunder which shook the house! More rain coming in this evening, for which we are grateful.
