It was a sunset that kept on giving and giving. It started with a green flash, which Rick and I observed from our deck - the first one we've seen for a while. Then the sunset colors lasted for so long, nearly an hour. It was wonderful! Paul Brewer captured it for us to see and relive.

I have another wonderful photo of that sunset which I will share tomorrow.

Jon Loveless saw some, and Paul Brewer too. Young Gray Whales, juvenile whales who did not migrate up to their feeding grounds in the Arctic, have been seen most days off the Mendonoma coast. Paul Brewer got a few photos of one of these whales.

Whale expert, Scott Mercer, is excited about this development. He says, “These sightings clearly demonstrate how rich our local coast is.”

Our heat wave is over and the smoky skies have cleared, thank goodness.

We had some subtropical clouds move up from the south last week, even bringing a few drops of rain. Clouds bring the opportunity for a beautiful sunset, and Paul Brewer was there to get this lovely photo.

We have had a lot of fog in the mornings, rather typical for August, or as some locals call it "Fogust!"

Paul Brewer photographed a Gray Whale recently, catching part of the back, and the tail.

Paul captured the entire sequence as the whale dove.

Paul Brewer photographed this Band-tailed Pigeon as the bird took off from a branch.

These large pigeons eat nuts, fruits and seeds. They travel in groups, so if you see one at your seed feeder, there are sure to be more soon. They have a soft cooing sound, almost like an owl, which you can hear at this link: https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Band-tailed_Pigeon/sounds

It's a sunny, breezy day on the beautiful Mendonoma coast!
