Laura Baker and Lewis Lubin have a apple tree at their Annapolis place. Their motion camera is pointed in the direction of that tree. We know Black Bears love apples! Last month their camera captured this healthy-looking bear.

Pat Whelan appears to be on a regular route of a Black Bear in The Sea Ranch. A few weeks ago, her camera caught this bear trying to figure out Pat's bear-proof garbage bins. Here's the video:

And Ron Bolander found evidence of a Black Bear at Gualala Point Regional Park just last weekend. The scat is full of bite-sized apples!

Maybe that was more than you wanted to know...

Thanks to Laura, Pat and Ron for allowing me to share their photos with you here.

We had a break from the rain on Christmas Day and much of Dec.26th, but the rain has returned in earnest late afternoon on Thursday. Rain total season to date before this afternoon's storm is 33.54 inches. A "normal" rain season at Rick's and my place in Anchor Bay is 50 inches.

We know several Black Bears live on the Mendonoma Coast. The proliferation of motion detector cameras/wildlife cameras gives us a peek at their nocturnal visits - this visit was on July 24, 2024.

Pat Whelan sent in two videos for us to enjoy. Once the bear disappears in the video, you can stop watching. I need to learn how to crop a video - soon!

This sure looks like a healthy bear! Thanks to Pat for allowing me to share her videos with  you here.

Same weather pattern, fog in the morning and mild temps in the afternoon.

Pat Whelan's motion detector camera has been busy lately. Just several weeks ago it photographed a Black Bear, which I shared on this blog. Then this beautiful Mountain Lion saunters across her front porch, looking very comfortable with the surroundings. Here's a screen shot from the video.

Sunny and very breezy today. The wind whipped up the Pacific Ocean, creating many whitecaps.

Pat Whelan wrote, "We had a Black Bear visit Monday night 2:30am as seen on our critter cam. He/she sniffed the bear boxes and then walked down the trail towards the creek.  No damage."

"Last year our trash enclosure was badly damaged by a bear on two different occasions.  We now have bear boxes!  We ordered them through Tahoe Bear Boxes." Their website is https://bearbox.org/

Here are two videos showing this Black Bear. He/she has a lot of twigs and leaves on its back. I wonder if the bear was sleeping nearby just before his visit.

And here is where the Black Bear is leaving their property.

Thanks to Pat for allowing me to share her videos with you here.

It's warmer today and the breeze is not so brisk. Sunny and warmer for tomorrow and the weekend!

A large, healthy-looking Mountain Lion has been seen twice at Pat Whelan’s home at The Sea Ranch. Pat wrote, “ Our critter cam spotted this big Mountain Lion walking through our yard this morning at 12:50 am, Feb. 22. Elegant, confident and handsome!  We live on the north end of Sea Ranch.” The Cougar paid the Whelans another visit a week or so later. Pat wrote, “Cougar sighting again in our yard on critter cam at 5:30 am.”

As I watched the videos, it sure looked like the Mountain Lion was comfortable in his or her surroundings. It’s hard to tell if it’s a male or female. This is the time of year most Mountain Lions mate. This could be a male here to mate with one or several females over the next few weeks.

Thanks to Pat for allowing me to share this screen shot with you here.

It's raining this afternoon! Good weather for watching the Academy Awards.
