Peggy Berryhill noticed this beat-up Pale Swallowtail. Something took a couple of bites out of its wings, but it lived to feed on these sweet flowers.

And Jackie Baas found a Painted Lady, also a little worse for wear.

If these butterflies could talk, what a tale they might tell us!

Thanks to Peggy and Jackie for allowing me to share their photos with you here.

Yesterday, Monday, it was very warm, hitting 90 degrees at Rick's and my place in Anchor Bay. Overnight the blessed fog rolled in and this morning it was 52 degrees. That's weather whip-lash!

Kathy Grace had this Pale Swallowtail land on a blooming dahlia, a beautiful sight to behold.

And Paul Brewer photographed a Painted Lady feeding on a flower in his Gualala garden.

I love butterflies and I will stop what I'm doing to watch them as they travel from flower to flower.

It's a beach day on the Mendonoma Coast! The fog pulled back and if you get a little bit away from the coastline, it's hot! There are beautiful clouds in the sky today, which might bring us a spectacular sunset. Yes, sunset season looks to be here.

Pat Maxwell found this Anise Swallowtail Butterfly on her appropriately-named Butterfly bush.

And Catherine Miller spotted this Pale Swallowtail Butterfly feeding on the geraniums in her garden recently.

The other swallowtail we commonly see here on the coast is a Western Tiger Swallowtail. This photo was taken some years ago by Peter Baye. This lovely butterfly is feeding on one of my favorite native wildflowers, the Leopard Lily.

Today is simply one of the most beautiful days on the Mendonoma Coast - sunny, bright with a gently breeze.

It is calm and sunny here today, and butterflies are being seen, always a joy. Tamarrah LeFeber recently photographed a Pale Swallowtail feeding on blackberry blossoms.

Pine White Butterflies have also appeared. They circle around the Bishop Pine trees at our place. Here's a photo Drew Fagan took of one feeding on lavender.

The website davesgarden has some interesting information on butterfly legends. "Native American's had many beliefs about butterflies and one of the most prevalent across a number of nations was the one that butterflies make wishes come true. It was said that if you whisper your wish to a butterfly and then release it, it will take your wish to the Great Spirit, who will then grant the wish. Since butterflies are silent, only the Great Spirit (who hears and sees everything) can hear each wish." It's been downright hot if you get a little ways away from the bluffs and beaches, though today it cooled off a bit. Butterflies have been flitting through, delighting our senses. Recently Mary Hunter photographed a Pale Swallowtail Butterfly.

This beautiful butterfly was feeding - nectaring - on Mary's lavender blossoms. Pretty as a picture!

A close relative is a Western Tiger Swallowtail, with similar markings. This butterfly is feeding on a native wildflower, Leopard Lily, and was taken by Peter Baye.
