I have never seen a young Western Gray Squirrel but Steve Bennett recently captured one with his camera. Cute little guy or gal!

Gray Squirrels are tree squirrels, and they are known to be shy. When you see one, most likely it will run up a tree! Here's a photo of a mature Gray Squirrel taken by Ron LeValley.

We have these handsome squirrels living in the area where we live.

Thanks to Steve and Ron for allowing me to share their photos with you here. You can see much more of Ron's nature photography at this link: http://levalleyphoto.com/home/

The heat wave ended, the marine layer pushed in and smoke overhead made for an eerie, cool day.

Gaily Jackson enjoys exploring along the Gualala River. Two weeks ago she photographed a bird that was difficult to identify, until Ron LeValley let us know it was a juvenile Black-crowned Night-Heron.

Gaily got several nice photos of this beautiful bird. The first one below shows a larger Great Blue Heron on the left side.

Then late last week, Gaily found an adult and got this photo.

It's nice to see these Night-Herons here.

Thanks to Gaily for allowing me to share her photos with you here. To see much more of her nature photography, here is the link to her website: http://gailyimages.com/

We had a very strange wind event here late yesterday afternoon. Chris McManus, the editor of the Independent Coast Observer, is researching the phenomenon and I hope to tell you more about it later this week. Today is bright sun and cool temps!

I love these beautiful birds. White-tailed Kites are a joy to see. John Batchelder recently photographed an adult hovering in the air, listening for its prey in the meadow below. Watch out, Voles!

Steve Stewart got this great close up of a juvenile White-tailed Kite resting on a branch.

Their calls are a quiet chirp. You can listen for yourself at this link to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology: https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/White-tailed_Kite/sounds

Thanks to John and Steve for allowing me to share their photos with you here.

We are having a lovely autumn day on the coast today. Cool and calm, just the way we like it!

Joan Hoffman found this salamander, a Northwestern Salamander, in the bottom of a bucket.

Stacey Lore found a juvenile Pacific Giant Salamander. My, what big eyes you have!

Rainy weather is what these amphibians love!If you are interested in learning more about California amphibians, Gary Nafis has a fabulous website: http://www.californiaherps.com/index.html

Such a beautiful hawk! Paul Brewer spotted this young Red-shouldered Hawk in late August.

Paul said the fledgling had been trying to hunt, but wasn't very good at it. I'm sure hunger improved this hawk's hunting ability.

Paul got another look recently at what we presume is the same young Red-shouldered Hawk. The first photo below had me laughing. It's not often you see a bird with its head tilted back, looking behind its body!

Red-shouldered Hawk are year-round residents of the Mendonoma coast. Thanks to Paul for allowing me to share his photos with you here. To see much more of Paul's nature photography, here is the link to his website: http://www.capturingnatureswonders.com/
