I'll let John Batchelder tell the story:

“I was actually shooting several whales having what I thought at the time was a feeding frenzy, when the hawk landed right in front of me. Just dumb luck. I can’t tell you how many times I have tried to capture a shot of most likely this same bird only to end up with nothing, a blur, or a lousy picture that mainly features someone’s roof.”

Coopers Hawk

Several years ago John caught one taking flight.

They are beautiful birds, but hard to photograph as John will tell you!

Thanks to John for allowing me to share his photos with you here.

John Batchelder spotted this little bird, a Brown Creeper.

These tiny birds inhabit forests and spiral their way up tree trunks in their search of bugs in the bark. Their stiff tail helps them balance. To hear their call, here is the link to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology: https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Brown_Creeper/sounds

John Batchelder had this beautiful, healthy Bobcat pose for him recently.

Bobcat

Bobcats have been hunted for their beautiful pelts. I'm glad to say that is no longer legal in California.

Thanks to John for allowing me to share his photo with you here. Happy Thanksgiving to all who celebrate this holiday!

John Batchelder was watching Sea Lions rafting and feeding recently when three Humpback Whales showed up. One breached as John was ready with his camera.

And here's where the whale hit the water. Notice the birds nearby - these are extremely rare Black-vented Shearwaters.

Here's a photo where John shows the three Humpbacks.

Gray Foxes are year round residents of the Mendonoma Coast. John Batchelder recently photographed one showing off its beautiful long tail.
