There are two varieties of Hedgehog mushrooms that grow on our property and I love to eat both of them! The first Bellybutton Hedgehog, Hydnum umbilicatum, is up but needs some time to grow. Also spotted were several Sweet Tooth Hedgehogs, Hydnum repandum. I have never spotted Hedgehogs this early.

I thought I had a chance to photograph the green flash last night but no luck. There is a good reason people call it the "elusive green flash!" The sunset was beautiful, though, all yellows and oranges with the dark Pacific Ocean underneath.

Some days it just pays to watch the sunset with your camera at the ready. This Wednesday Cathleen Crosby was watching the sunset thinking maybe, just maybe, there might be a green flash. The horizon was clear with a thin layer of clouds above it. Sure enough, Cathleen saw a green flash and snapped a picture at the perfect moment in time.

They are like finding a jewel in the forest - Mother Nature's treasure hunt. Rick and I were driving down our driveway early this morning when I saw it, a beautiful King Bolete or Boletus edulis. We had walked down the same driveway yesterday but it wasn't up then. The life force in wild mushrooms must be very strong indeed!

Warm weather is blessing the Mendonoma Coast this weekend and last night the horizon was clear, perfect conditions for the green flash. And there was a small one but once again I missed the shot. I promise to keep trying. Here's how the sunset looked. Beautiful!

It's easy to watch the sunset when you are on the Mendonoma Coast - all it takes is a view of the ocean. With the warm weather the horizon has been clear the past several nights and, sure enough, there were green flashes on Monday and Tuesday. I tried to photograph Monday's green flash but wasn't successful. But at least my photos will show you what to look for. I will also put a link to a beautiful photo of a green flash that was shared here.

                      The sunset begins - rather a strange shape to the sun!

The sun is disappearing and you can see the separation you should look for.

                    And this is where you would see the green flash. Do you see a hint of green in the blazing yellow? This whole top turns emerald green for a second or two just before it disappears.

Cook's Beach is a lovely wind-protected sandy beach on the north end of Gualala. The Redwood Coast Land Conservancy manages it. There is an easy trail from the bluff down to the beach. It's a perfect place to watch the sunset and perhaps see a green flash. Karen Tracy captured a beautiful sunset from the beach and has kindly allowed me to share it here.
