The southward-bound Gray Whale migration has begun earlier than usual this season. And, as we've been having clear-as-a-bell weather, it is easy to see their spouts. Peter Cracknell photographed a few Grays at sunset.

I wish you the happiest of New Years and hope you will take the time to appreciate our natural world - it is filled with wonders.

Paul Brewer has been photographing the northward migration of mother Gray Whales with their calves. They have really be putting on a show! This first photo was taken Wednesday, May 21st. A Gray Whale calf breaches - always a breathtaking moment.

Before the wind picked up yesterday there were quite a few sightings of Gray Whales, mostly mothers with their calves. Richard Kuehn photographed a calf apparently lunge feeding.

And the young Gray Whale also breached several times.

This is a fun time to be on the Mendonoma Coast! Thanks to Rich for allowing me to share his photos with you here.

Most days this past week Gray Whale mothers with calves have been spotted. They are quite close in. Paul Brewer recently photographed two mother/calf pairs. This is, I believe, a calf as there are no barnacles on it.

We have received a lot of blessed rain here on the Mendonoma Coast. Every drop is welcome. On Tuesday a wild and windy storm hit the Coast.

It is fun to watch showers over the ocean. Several of these showers reached us as they headed east.

Thunderstorms sweeping over the coast.

The next day, yesterday, the swells were big, creating big waves. Rick and I went to the Point Arena Lighthouse to watch for Gray Whales with friends and I photographed some of the beautiful wave action. You will have to imagine the sound of the crashing waves. And, yes, we did see some Grays!

Swell after swell rolled in. It can be mesmerizing to watch the Pacific Ocean!

Today we await a smaller storm. The weekend is to be clear and warm. I'm wondering if abalone divers will be able to go on their first hunt for red treasure this year!
