California Red-legged Frogs are a treat to see. Their numbers are down and they are federally protected under the Endangered Species Act. Chris Pechal, on a biotic survey on The Sea Ranch, photographed one of these frogs in Salal Creek.

It's good to see this frog is thriving at Salal Creek!

Thanks to Chris for allowing me to share  her photos with you here.

Oh my, the day started off HOT, with the thermometer moving past 90 degrees by 9 am! But the wind picked up early this afternoon and the temp went down to 80, thank goodness. The ocean was flat calm this morning. Here's a photo from our deck taken at dawn this morning. There's the full moon low in the sky. The fog is AWOL!

Chris Pechal sent in the first photo of a blooming Calypso Orchid.

Don't be deceived by Chris' photo - the flower and stalk are very tiny, only about two inches high. I always first look for the dark green leaf that lays flat on the ground.

Never try to transplant these orchids as they need a fungus in the soil to thrive. They are tiny jewels of the deep forests, forests that are undisturbed by humans.

After all the drenching rain and hail, we are gifted with a spring-like day. Temps hit 70 degrees today. Another sunny day is predicted for tomorrow and then some more of the wet stuff.

Chris Pechal managed to capture a recent green flash at sunset.

I have tried for years to photograph one and come up short every time! Fortunately, others are more proficient. Since green flashes are said to bring good luck, let me wish you good luck in the New Year. 2020, we won't miss you one bit.

Sunny with clouds today, and crashing waves are reverberating on cliffs and beaches. We received .29 inches from yesterday's rain. More rain in the forecast.

Chris Pechal wrote, “This juvenile Cooper's Hawk flew up on our deck trying to catch one of the quail that was feeding down below. They got away again!”

Cooper’s Hawks are known for their flying prowess and, yes, they eat smaller birds.

Thanks to Chris for allowing me to share her photo with you here.

The weather has turned warm today, mid 70's. Feels strange for mid-November. Yesterday in the warm weather, local beach accesses were full of cars. Might as well take advantage of the good beach weather!
