Catherine Miller was the lucky forager who found two of this year's first King Boletes, Boletus edulis. The first photo shows a banana slug on the big bolete. Banana slugs love these porcini mushrooms!

The second photo shows a smaller Bolete. Those tiny gray mushrooms are Fairy Bonnets, which are appearing in vast numbers right now on the Mendonoma coast.

Boletus edulis, also known as Cep or Porcini, are delicious, edible mushrooms. They are so fun to find. I hope I join the ranks of happy foragers very soon!

This is the time of year we have daily sightings of Monarch Butterflies. These are the members of the Methuselah generation, the longer-lived butterflies that will migrate south. They are feeding and gathering strength for their migration. I saw this one feeding on my abelia bush and then resting on a nearby leaf.

Catherine Miller photographed this Monarch feeding on her lantana.

Today is the autumnal equinox. What better way to celebrate the changing of the seasons with photos of Monarch Butterflies.

Thanks to Catherine for allowing me to share her photo with you here. Happy autumn, everyone!

Tree Mercer was out near the Point Arena-Stornetta Lands and took my advice to always check near your toes. Wildflowers can be very small. She looked down and this is what she found - Redmaids, Calandrinia ciliata.

California Poppies have been amazing this spring. Peter Cracknell photographed one tightly closed up, a rather unusual look at this wildflower.

Native rhododendrons, Pacific Rhododendron, are blooming. Catherine Miller took this photo.

Today we are having light rain showers. That can only benefit our beautiful native wildflowers. Thanks to Tree, Peter, and Catherine for allowing me to share their photos with you here.

It's been a strange mushroom year. Hedgehogs were nearly nonexistent this winter. But the first Prince mushrooms have bloomed. Catherine Miller was the lucky forager.

Beautiful sunny weather today after all the rain, though fog has covered the Pacific Ocean. Mushrooms foragers like Catherine and me will keep our eyes open to see what edibles might appear.
