California Sisters seems to be having a good year, as sightings continue to pour in. I saw several this morning, feeding on various flowers on the deck. Perry Hoffman recently photographed one up on the Gualala Ridge.

Monarchs are arriving now, such a pleasure. Perry photographed one at the same location as the CA Sister.

Thanks to Perry for allowing me to share his photos with you here. Perry will be showing some of his varied artwork at the Coast Highway Art Collective. See below for info!

It's warming up today! The next few days will be quite warm. Should be a chance to see a green flash at sunset with no fog on the horizon.

It seems to have been a good year for Pale Swallowtail butterflies, as there has been numerous sightings of them. Andi Kahn recently sent in this photo of one.

Peter Baye found this pair mating on his deck near Annapolis in early October. Seems late to be mating, but who am I to judge!

Here is a photo taken by Robert Scarola to show you what they look like with wings extended.

Amanda Stinson had just built this stone tower when this California Sister butterfly flitted down on her hand.

Just why was Amanda building a stone tower? I'll let her answer.

Amanda wrote, “When I caught wind of a ‘balance for peace day,’ with rock balancers from all over the world, I had to participate. When I finished, a California Sister appeared, fluttering around, made a balance on my fingers, and graciously posed for a picture. It seems butterflies like peace too.”

Thanks to Amanda for allowing me to share her photo with you here.

Emily Nelson had two different butterflies recently feeding on her flowering rosemary bush. The first is a Painted Lady. It has been discovered recently that Painted Ladies migrate at 3000 feet elevation - amazing!

And the second butterfly is a California Sister.

Rosemary grows abundantly here on the Coast. It's nice to know that besides flavoring our meals, it feeds butterflies.
