Tag Archives: arches off Point Arena-Stornetta Lands

Saturday, May 18th is Celebrate the Coast at the Point Arena-Stornetta Lands. There is a LOT planned and it sounds like great fun. If you walk from City Hall all the way to Lighthouse Road, about halfway you will see some very distinctive arches. This is what they looked like just three weeks ago.

But two weeks ago the closest arch collapsed, and this is what the arches look like now. Leslie Dahlhoff sent in these photos.

Thanks to Leslie for allowing me to share her photos with you here. She is also at the helm of the Celebrate the Coast event. Here's the poster showing all the activities. Hope to see some of you there!

The heavy, cool fog of this morning has disappeared into brilliant sunshine. Nice!

Bob Rutemoeller photographed some of the huge surf off the Point Arena-Stornetta Lands on December 26th. I was amazed to see the arches so inundated with water and foam.

Here is what they usually look like. This photo was taken by Laura Cover in a calmer moment.

Bob also photographed several big waves coming in. The Pacific Ocean was LOUD that day!

Thanks to Bob and Laura for allowing me to share their photos with you here.

It's sunny today, and it looks like there are no clouds on the horizon. If so, there may be a green flash at sunset today!

Art in the Redwoods, held the third weekend in August, is always a big event in Gualala. Rick and I have the honor - and the agony - of picking a piece of art that represents the beautiful Mendonoma Coast. This year we chose a dramatic photograph by Scott Chieffo of the arches seen just off the Point Arena-Stornetta Lands. Scott titled it, "A Seal's eye view."

Seals Eye View by Scott Chieffo Best Mendonoma Sighting 2014

Jane Reichhold wrote a haiku ceremony for the dedication of these Lands. The last haiku read:

A stroke of the pen, A curve of the coast again, Sacred Land.

Scott's photo shows us the dramatic beauty of these Lands, forever preserved.

Congratulations to Scott for winning Best Mendonoma Sighting 2014. And thanks to him for allowing me to share his photo with you here. To see more of Scott's nature photography, here is his website: http://www.schieffophotography.com/
