Paul Nordstrand found the first reported Calypso Orchid in bloom and Jinx McCombs photographed it.

They are so tiny, I usually spot them by their single leaf, which rests on the forest duff.

Amy Ruegg found one recently too.

Craig Tooley took this super-close-up photo of one, showing its intricate beauty.

And Grace O'Malley was surprised to see a completely white Calypso Orchid blooming amidst the normal colored ones.

Thanks to Jinx, Craig, Amy and Grace for allowing me to share their photos with you here.

Amy Ruegg photographed this jaunty-looking orange Bat Star recently.

This member of the family Asterinidae comes in many different colors. Bat Stars have webbing between their arms, which resemble bat wings. They live in the intertidal zone and they help keep the ocean clean by eating algae and dead animals. Amy photographed this Star at low tide, the perfect time to go tide pooling.

Amy Ruegg recently photographed stormy weather, which is what we are having today.

storm-clouds-by-amy-rueggAfter a wet storm earlier today, we have what I call a "wait five minutes" kind of day. Brilliant sunshine, quickly followed by showers, maybe a little hail, and then more sunshine. It's a fun day to prepare for the holiday!

Since midnight we have 4.75 inches of rain in our gauge. That's a lotta rain a little more than 12 hours! Creeks and rivers are running fast, dangerous, and muddy. When this storm passes on, the Mendonoma coast will be waiting to fill you with awe at its beauty. Waterfalls will be plentiful. Craig Tooley photographed these two waterfalls after last week's rains.

seasonal-waterfalls-by-craig-tooleyAmy Ruegg paid a visit to Stengel Beach, a public access trail on The Sea Ranch, late Saturday afternoon. This is what she found.

stengel-beach-waterfall-by-amy-rueggI can only imagine what this looks like today after nearly five inches of rain!

The weekend looks sunny and dry, if cold. Perfect weather for bundling up and exploring all that the Mendonoma coast has to offer!
