We take a break from a series of storms that brought much needed rain to California. This week is forecast to be dry and warm, a perfect time to visit the Mendonoma Coast.

When the storms were arriving, the wave action was beautiful to behold. Allen Vinson was out with his camera and got these wonderful photos. First a rainbow wave.

The surging Pacific Ocean is in plain sight.

And here storm clouds gather over a silver ocean.

Thanks to Allen for allowing me to share his photos with you here.

Allen Vinson photographed this White-tailed Kite at the moment it spotted its lunch. When you look at this photo is it any wonder that birds remind us of angels?

Allen took the photo below on a sunny day. The Kite looks like an ornament in the tree.

White-tailed Kites are year round residents of the Mendonoma Coast. They have the ability to be motionless in the air by facing into the wind. This is called kiting and is indicative of this Kite.

Allen Vinson recently visited the new addition to the Point Arena-Stornetta Public Lands. You access this beautiful land behind the Point Arena City Hall. While there Allen had some wonderful sightings. He also got this great photo of a fellow enjoying the waves off Arena Cove.

Allen visited at low tide as you can see by the photo below.

And he spotted a beautiful Ferruginous Hawk on top a tree.

I love this photo below of the big hawk taking off.

And here the hawk is soaring, perhaps looking for a meal.

And this last photo shows the hawk lit up by the sun.

We are very happy that these new lands were acquired and made available to all. They now form another portion of the California Coastal Trail.

Happy New Year! May 2014 be filled with wonder and joy.

Yes, we need rain. But what we are getting are beautiful, sunny days, albeit very cold for the coast. Allen Vinson caught this lovely sight of Gulls in the water yesterday, near Walk On Beach on The Sea Ranch.

The sunrises and sunsets this past week have been heavenly. I will share some of them tomorrow.

It looked like there would be no possibility of a green flash from the vantage point of Allen Vinson's home on The Sea Ranch last Saturday, July 7. Fog was the order of the day. But the fog lifted just before sunset and Allen caught magic - again - when he photographed the green flash.

You will see in this second photo - a close up - that Allen photographed a double green flash.

And here is what the weather looked like some minutes before - a fog shrouded day.

It's a Mendonoma Coast tradition to always try and watch the sunset. You might catch magic like Allen and witness the phenomenon known as the green flash. And it's real, not a myth!
