This photo from Allan Hogle made me laugh. The sun is setting while he is waiting to get through the construction project on Highway One. All of a sudden the two lights turn green at the moment the sun is setting...a unique, double green flash!

Here's a photo of a more traditional green flash taken a while ago by Allen Vinson.

Thanks to Allan and Allen for allowing me to share their photos with you here.

It's quite overcast today and oddly warm - temps in the low 70's. Rain is in our forecast for the weekend. More Boletus edulis have been found and the first Chanterelles too. Hooray!

Allan Hogle found a mushroom I don’t believe anyone would try to eat. He wrote, “There is a regular appearance here at The Farm on the Gualala Ridge, always under out Chestnut trees, at this time of year. According to David Arora’s Mushrooms Demystified, it’s Deadman’s Foot. It seems to have that eerie Halloween connection!”

The scientific name of this fungus is Pisolithus arenarius.

Here are some prettier mushrooms, Wooly Chanterelles, as photographed by Adrian Adams.

Ed Roshitsh photographed this Black Bear at his Gualala property, just walking along.

A few weeks earlier, Allan Hogle photographed these bear prints near his farm by Old Stage Road.

Last month, an obviously pregnant Black Bear was caught on a motion detector camera on the ridge. Yes, we do share the Mendonoma coast with several Black Bears.

We are experiencing a big, windy storm today, with two more storms behind it. The drought has broken with all this wonderful winter rain, at least in Northern California.

Allan Hogle found this caterpillar feeding on a flowering fennel head. He wondered just what it was.

Anise Swallowtail caterpillar by Allen HogleIt's an Anise Swallowtail caterpillar. Their host plants are dill, parsley...and fennel!  Here is what it will turn into, a Anise Swallowtail butterfly. Such a beautiful butterfly. This photo taken by Drew Fagan,An Anise Swallowtail nectaring on Lavender by Drew FaganI just acquired an excellent booklet for identifying butterflies and caterpillars, titled “Butterflies of Central and Northern California” by Jim Brock. The Four-eyed Frog Bookstore in Gualala will be carrying it. http://www.foureyedfrog.com/
